Virtual In-Class Field Trips

Virtual field trips are unique experiences for the classroom teacher and the students class to view science from a different perspective. These field trips will provide a standards-based lesson which will allow students to develop an understanding of the content and do a hands-on experiment. An experienced GYSTC instructor will present the lesson via Zoom. The teacher should register the class, provide a list of students that will participate and help monitor the class while Zoom instruction is going on. Each activity will incorporate STEM careers related to the topic. Consumable supplies will be provided for all students. Member GYSTC systems may participate for no cost while non-member systems may participate at the published rate.

Students should be able to identify the parts of a plant. They will be able to describe how different plant types have parts with unique characteristics.

Rosie Revere’s Flying Machine (S4P)

9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Students will listen to the story Rosie Revere Engineer by Andrea Beaty read by NASA astronauts. Students will then work through the Engineering Design Process to design a flying machine for Rosie Revere. Students will build a simple “flying” machine as they investigate aspects of force and motion.

Taking A Lesson from Nature (S3E1)

Come take a virtual trip to a sandhill river area in the Coastal Plain of Georgia. Students will learn about various animal adaptations.  Then students will engage in the engineering design process to create an invention that gets its inspiration from nature!

Sound Investigation (S4P2a, b)

Bring earplugs, because things may get loud!  Students will be guided through a sound investigation to observe how frequency and volume change as we change the size and strike force of various metal objects.  We will also use Chrome Music Lab to hear and visualize how sound waves can be affected as we change these same variables.

Strawberry DNA Extraction- Heredity and Genetics (S7L3)

Students should complete the Strawberry DNA extraction lab.  In the lab, students will create a buffer using household products (dish soap, salt and water). By following lab protocol, students will extract DNA from at least two fruits and then compare the DNA of each of the fruits.

Students will investigate and create their own circuit!  Students will learn the basic components of a circuit and then decide whether or not pictures of circuits are complete or incomplete circuits.

Potential Energy to Kinetic Energy – Catapult (S8P2b)

Catapult Students will be able to apply what they learn about potential and kinetic energy in the construction of a tongue-depressor type catapult. Following the directions included in the plans, they will make a catapult and test various elements in the experimental design method of investigations.

Join us for an out of this world experience!  Students will learn to use to navigate the night sky to find stars, planets, and deep sky objects.  Students will also be taken on a tour of our corner of the universe as they learn about early astronomy, the structure of our solar system, and our place in the universe.

Earth's Surface - Erosion and Deposition (S6E5d, e)

9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Students will build an erosion table using aluminum basting trays and will use them to experiment with different soil types and landscape elements that can be effected by water erosion. The students will create various landscape settings and see how different volumes and rates of water will erode the landscapes. The students will be able to apply their erosion table studies to actual construction site situations.
